Healthcare cares, treats and diagnoses millions of people every day, from newborns to patients with life-threatening illnesses. Health care consists of hospitals, outpatient care, doctors, employees and nurses. In healthcare, changes are always happening due to technological advancements, and without these advancements, healthcare would not be as successful as it is today. Technology has played an important role in health care and will continue in the coming years with new diagnostic and treatment methods and procedures to help keep the lives of the American people safe. However, thanks to technological advances, healthcare still manages to make an excessive number of medical errors. Healthcare organizations face many problems and these problems negatively impact the healthcare system. Medical errors can occur in different ways in healthcare. Medical errors are mistakes made by healthcare providers without the intention of harming patients. These errors ranged from a communication error, to a surgical error, to a manufacturing error, to a diagnosis error, to a wrong medication error. Hundreds of thousands of patients die each year due to medical error. With the increase in medical errors, the United States has become the third leading cause of death. Given the number of medical errors currently occurring, which is a current problem in health care, correcting the errors made costs health care billions of dollars each year.
