Howl Pendragon (or Howell Jenkins depending on his location) comes from the Moving Castle trilogy by Diana Wynne Jones and the Studio Ghibli film Howl's Moving Castle. Howl is a mysterious wizard who is said to be handsome but terrible and has often been accused of eating the hearts of pretty girls due to his habit of bossing women around only to dump them. At twenty-one, he gave his heart to a shooting star out of pity, which seems to have made him lose some of his humanity. Due to his personality in the book, it appears that he has a relatively balanced rating of all five personalities. He is very open-minded and extroverted, very low conscientious, and falls somewhere in the middle in terms of agreeableness and neuroticism. (Jones, 1986) He has a high openness character due to his extravagance and vast knowledge. He is one of the greatest wizards having studied under Mrs. Penstemmon and his knowledge of magic ranges from war to cosmetics. He is shown making a transport spell for the king, making charms to make himself more handsome, covering the room in slime during a tantrum, transforming into a red setter, and having a magical battle with a witch. This shows that he had studied and invented a wide range of magic. He also studied potion making and is from Wales on Earth, it is assumed he completed his studies before entering Ingary's portal. (Jones, 1986) He is very unconscientious due to his unreliability and messy nature. Before Sophie comes to live in his castle and becomes his nanny, the whole house is a mess. Dust is everywhere, the fireplace is filled with enough soot to suggest it hasn't been cleaned in a while, the bathroom takes Sophie days to clean, and cobwebs are everywhere. The only time he seems to become lonely is when something he doesn't like is forced on him. He generally tries to avoid heavy work and will hide if necessary. (Jones, 1986) To summarize, according to the five-factor personality model, Howl is open to different things, intelligent, he can be unreliable, is very disorganized and messy, is kind, forgiving, but cruel, calm, rarely ill . temperate and is an overall sociable person. He has a high percentage of Openness and Extraversion, a very low percentage of Conscientiousness, and is near the upper average for Agreeableness and Neuroticism traits. The five-factor model appears to be relatively effective at deciphering character personality, and similarly, deciphering a character's personality shows how effective the five-factor model can be..
