Essay / The History of Prejudice and Discrimination - 944
To be prejudiced means that you discriminate against another race or group of people. Discrimination is a horrible thing that has existed since the beginning of time. This can be dangerous because it can cause problems, for example Hitler discriminates against Jews and causes millions of people to hate them. I don't think discrimination will disappear completely, but there are ways to slow it down and/or reduce it. Many factors can cause people to be prejudiced or discriminate against another group. The people you are around, your family, and your friends can make you do things like hate another group of people. For example, I was watching a movie called Higher Learning, which is about a group of African Americans who attend a college filled with mostly white people. One of the main characters took a walk late at night and encountered someone who turned out to be affiliated with the KKK. Later in the film, he convinced the kid to join the group and become someone who hates African Americans. He hated them to the point that he shot a black girl because one of his “brothers” told him to do so. Stereotyping on social media is another factor of discrimination. There are also a whole bunch of stereotypes against the “gay and lesbian” community. Everything from the colors of their clothing to their lifestyle choices have been thoughtlessly invented and labeled about this group of people. Young gay people are already confused about their differences from the rest of society. These labels tend to confuse them even more, because they now think that they have to become what they see on television to embrace who they are, or that they should reject who they are because they don't like what they are... middle of paper ... Discrimination is a horrible thing that I think should stop completely. Prejudice has caused many problems for a long time, and it's time for it to stop. This can be a very dangerous thing, like how Hitler started the greatest war the planet has ever seen, against discrimination against the Jewish people. But there are ways to reduce this phenomenon, for example by legislating against prejudice in the public environment. I don't think discrimination will disappear entirely because people have their opinions on things. But I believe it can be slowed down so that it doesn't happen as much as before.
