  • Essay / A New Experience - 435

In class, we read four stories about immigrants and their experiences. Of all the stories, the one that touched me the most and that I could relate to the most was “No Speak English” by Sandra Cisneros. Mamacita is the main character of this story. She is the newcomer, the “immigrant”, in the new city. Later, Mamacita begins to miss her home a lot. She paints the walls of her chosen apartment like her old house pink. All she does all day is sit by the window, listening to Spanish radio shows just so she can hear songs that remind her of her country and so she doesn't feel as bad of the country. Then she realized that it made her miss him even more. Then, over time, her little boy starts speaking in English and she doesn't understand, which hurts her a lot. I can definitely relate to Mamasita's and my mother's experience when she first arrived in America, New York to be exact. My mother missed her home in Colombia very much. She tried to do or listen to anything that she thought wouldn't make her so homesick, but she realized just as well that it made her even more homesick. My mother isolated herself from the world and didn't meet anyone for the first 4 months. My mother began to ask herself during these four months: "How can you meet other people and make a new house a familiar environment for yourself if you never give it a chance and leave home?" » Lately, I realized that experiences like this are never easy. Feeling alone really hurts a lot of people emotionally, especially being different from everyone around you. When you feel different from the new people around you, you start to feel left out and all you want to do is run and hide. Doing this doesn't allow you to meet new people and experience new things. There is nothing wrong with yours or what you are used to, but you will never be comfortable in an unfamiliar environment..
