Hurst forces animals to be treated as they should only to be protected from each other. Hurst states, "Farmers don't put their pigs in cages because of sadism, but because dead pigs are a drag on the profit margin," Hurst then goes on to explain how a mother pig will eat her piglets if they are not not caged separately (6). Hurst then states that the only method to produce a large amount of food at a rapid rate for our population is industrial agriculture. Hurst also adds that if we were to turn solely to organic farming, some middle and lower class citizens would not have enough money. and would be forced to starve to death (4). On the other hand, Pollan describes how a pig can be separated from its mother so early that it begins to gnaw another pig's tail while it is nursing and, without hesitation, the other pig will even allow it. 'he becomes infected because of how desperate it is (369). Not to mention, Pollan believes that organic farming should be a method of farming that every farmer should adopt. Pollan describes an all-natural method similar to the water cycle, but instead, free-range cows eat grass and then their feces fertilize the grass they eat. and then it goes on endlessly (370). Pollan also believes that organic farming will provide healthier food while allowing citizens to get closer to the nature and origin of their food (363). Although these authors have different perceptions, they can agree that they want the best for the audience and their environment. Hurst and Pollan believe that if we can provide quality food to our people while being as humane as possible, then we can successfully nourish our minds as well as our
