  • Essay / Nike Commercial Analysis: Find Your Greatness

Jennilyn SeveryProfessor Ava GuyENC 1101March 23, 2014Nike Commercial: Find Your GreatnessModern television commercials have interesting hooks to keep viewers engaged, while some use humor, others use drama to grab the viewer's attention. Almost everyone knows about Nike products because it is a globally recognized brand. Nike advertising continually does an outstanding job of marketing their products and providing a wide variety of sportswear. The purpose of this essay is to elaborate the effectiveness of using jogger, narrator and obesity awareness. In advertising, the Nike “Find Your Greatness” ad is effective because of three things in the ad. First, the obese jogger is very effective. The minute-long commercial begins with an overweight boy jogging down a deserted rural road, and his size grows as he gets closer to the camera. At first it is difficult to see that it is an overweight person, but as the jogger gets closer, the viewer is surprised by the sight of an overweight boy instead of a famous athlete , muscular and fit. The jogger is in difficulty throughout his race. According to Tim Nudd, editor-in-chief of Adweek, the jogger's identity is: "Nathan Sorelle is 200 pounds and is 12 years old and from London, Ohio." » The obese jogger is very effective because instead of using a superstar athlete for the product promotion campaign, Nike chose someone real, someone obese and something totally different from normal advertising to sportswear. It's shocking to see an average, overweight Nathan Sorelle with no particular identity endorsing a Nike product. We guess it should be one of the famous superstar athletes such as Lebron James or Selena Williams....... middle of paper ...... who are idolized by their fans. Nike advertising has a great impact on the target audience with a positive message to motivate everyone and develop a connection with their own world or life. The advert is very effective because it goes against normal sportswear advertisements and somehow manages to shock the minds of the audience into believing that no matter the odds, anyone can achieve the " greatness.” Works Cited Nudd, Tim.
