Essay / Investing in Human Capital - 1706
Investing in Human CapitalWhen you think of investments, you may think of stocks, bonds, mutual funds, savings accounts, CDs, etc. There are other ways to invest. You can invest in your life through various things, whether voluntary or paid. This is called human capital and is “the stock of knowledge and skills, embodied in an individual as a result of education, training and experience that makes him or her more productive » (1). I have invested in my life in different ways and I will talk about them in the next few paragraphs. The first thing I experienced started when I was six years old. That’s when I started kindergarten at Kirbyville School. I went to Kirbyville until sixth grade, then I transferred to Branson and went there until I graduated my senior class of 2002. This is where I learned valuable skills that I can use at university. We all know we learn the basics from counting and our ABCs to trigonometry and college prep English. However, the most important thing in high school is that you learn perseverance to complete rigorous studies and lengthy assignments. These things prepare you for college. So, education before college is a very important investment because it is the first step to getting a job later in life that will provide you with a lot of capital. The next step I took was to go to College of the Ozarks. If that doesn't prepare me for having more money in the future, I don't know what does. I am an accounting major and am taking classes that give me great potential for a wide variety of jobs in the future. I have taken beginner and intermediate accounting classes and am currently taking advanced accounting. I have taken courses in cost accounting, government/nonprofit accounting, tax accounting, and am taking a course to improve my accounting computer skills. I also took business classes to help me understand the management and marketing side of a business. The principal teachers in my field of study have been Mr. Mahlman, Mr. Bearden, DR. PETTY, Mrs. Davis, Mrs. Moody and Mr. Reily. I also go to a college that is a work study college and that means you work for your studies on campus..
