He stated that Jesus Christ was an extremist for love. Amos was an extremist for justice. Paul the disciple was an extremist of the Christian gospel. He also referred to John Bunyan, Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson as creative extremists of their time. In Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech, he explained why his civil rights movement came to the capital. He said they went to the capital to cash a check. The check he was referring to dated back to when the authors drafted and signed the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. He claimed that the architects of the Republic had signed a promissory note that was paid to the order of every American. A promise was made that all men have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. In MLK's speech, he said, "America gave the black people a bad check that came back marked 'insufficient funds.' Do I believe that forty-five years later, that check was cashed and the promise was kept? I think we have definitely made progress in the civil rights movement, but we still have a long way to go.
