The famous choreographer Alonzo King is the Balanchine of a new style of dance, his style of dance, a style that turns away from the expected and catapults his audience into a state of wonder. . Alonzo King uses sharp lines intertwined with severe movements, all engaging classical technique to create movements never before seen in the world of dance. King's impressive resume includes training with a number of world-renowned ballet companies and work with an even larger number of companies, as well as establishing his own celebrated company: Alonzo King's LINES Ballet in San Francisco, California. Alonzo King started dancing at a very young age in Santa Barbara, California. He continued his training in New York at the Harkness School of Ballet, the Alvin Ailey Dance School, then the American Ballet Theater School and the School of American Ballet as a scholarship student. After training, he apprenticed with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and performed in several companies, many from Europe. Shortly after, he returned to California where he established his ballet company LINES in San Francisco, California. King launched his first season in 1982 by reprising a piece “Maya,” which he had originally choreographed and directed at South Coast Contemporary Dance Theater. From that point on, the company continued to grow and created a new version of an incredibly old technique. In the world of dance, an impressive number of choreographers have had a lasting impact on the way dance is perceived by its audiences.
