    INTRODUCTIONSSubstance abuse is the continued use of drugs or alcohol despite negative consequences for the individual using them, their friends, their family and the community. Many addicted people first begin using a recreational form or taking prescription medications and become dependent over time due to inappropriate use. The Misuse of Drug Act (1971) states that export, production and possession with intent to supply are illegal. This is why drug abuse is generally considered a crime while most individuals overlook it as a mental health problem. As a result, most people do not seek help due to stigma and fear of the law.
