    New mirrors are on the market and many homes have been renovated with these mirrors. These new mirrors are like Snow White's mirror, they tell you who is the fairest of them all. A little girl looks at her new mirror which tells her that she must wear makeup and look a certain way to be beautiful. This new mirror is television and the voice that tells it is the media. The media portrays women's beauty in a certain way that distorts beauty. The media distorts the image so much that women begin to see unrealistic beauty and think that all women should actually look this way. An experiment carried out by Mahler Beckerley and Vogel (2010) demonstrates that women's attitudes towards certain looks are reflected in the way they perceive models. There were two groups of women and some saw photos of tanned models and the others saw models who were not tanned. Participants were then asked to describe their attitude towards tanning. The group of women who looked at tanned models had a more positive attitude towards tanning and the group of women who looked at models without tans had a negative attitude towards tanning. This research shows that the media has a great influence on the decisions women make about their appearance. So, what is beauty? Is the beauty the perfect model in a magazine? Is this the stunning TV actress? Should you be thin and tall?
