  • Essay / The reason why we need to increase the age limit for smoking

Cigarette contains different toxic ingredients, and nicotine is the one that is addictive and leads to different diseases. Cigarette smoking is one of the worst problems facing our world and the main reason why this term is stressful is its consequences. Cigarettes can cause various illnesses that can directly or indirectly lead to death; “Smoking is responsible for nearly one in five deaths in the United States” (smoking). Most of the time, this consequence exists strongly among young smokers or the victims may be affected by this consequence because they started smoking young. In the United States, 18 is the legal age for smoking cigarettes and people still use this law, but now is a good time to change because younger citizens have been particularly affected by early smoking. Instead of setting the age limit for cigarette smoking at 18, we need to raise it to 21 for liability and health reasons, and since the age limit for alcohol and marijuana consumption is 21 years old, we must use the same age limit for smoking cigarettes. From the above few paragraphs, we can learn how young smokers can be affected by smoking, especially young smokers who are legally allowed to smoke. Currently, the age limit for cigarette smoking is starting to increase from 18 to 21; according to the New York Times, Needham, Massachusetts, Boston and New York have raised the smoking age to 21 (Hartocollis). States are starting to raise the cigarette smoking age limit to 21 because they realized they were using the wrong cigarette smoking age limit. The United States spends a lot of money on health care regarding smoking, but if the age limit is raised to 21, the country could save millions of dollars..
