Each of the cells has precisely half the number of chromosomes of the original cell. Many different processes take place in this phase, giving the cell time to prepare for the second part of meiosis. The only thing that persists is that the genetic material does not copy itself, but continues to divide in its place. The next stage is prophase 2. During this phase, the chromosomes start moving again towards the metaphase plate, which is in the middle of the cell. The next stage is metaphase 2: the chromosomes line up along the center of the cell before it divides in two. Then the chromatids point toward opposite ends of the cell. The next stage is anaphase 2. This is the penultimate phase of meiosis and many events occur. The first event occurs when sister chromatids separate and move toward opposite ends of the pole. When this happens, the spindle fibers elongate and enlarge the cell. Then the paired chromatids will begin to detach from each other. Now, each pair of chromatids is considered a complete chromosome. Anaphase 2 will now begin to prepare for the final phase of meiosis. The two cell poles begin to move further apart and this can now be seen as a division. At the end of this phase, each pole
