Essay / Unrealistic Expectations of Women - 371
Unrealistic Expectations of Women I can't tell you how many times I've opened a fashion magazine, listened to radio ads, watched TV ads, or observed the stereotypes in extreme society criticism and I have seen the effects our expectations have had on people, especially young women. There are so many instances during daily life that I feel like I'm living vicariously through the body of a Victoria's Secret model. I can only wonder how many others feel this way too. I was recently flipping through the pages of the 2002 issue of Sport's Illustrated Swimsuit, and within five minutes I was degrading my body and my appearance. I couldn't help but compare my body to that of a woman who is 5'10" and weighs 105 pounds, while the average woman is 5'6" and weighs 140 pounds. It is no wonder that there are so many cases of anorexia and bulimia when a model, comparable to the stick figures drawn everywhere by kindergarteners, is yet another symbol of what is considered beautiful . Another article that caught my eye was in an old Cosmopolitan magazine. I was just hanging around. It was called “Five Solutions That Will Make Him Want You.” Now my first reaction was one of frustration. Why is there so much pressure for the opposite sex to want you. It is a dreaded curse that cannot be escaped. We will always try to impress the opposite sex. There will always be something about us that isn't quite right, or a flaw that if we could just fix it somehow, we would be perfect. Girls, let me ask you something. Do you think these models are happy? They are constantly under enormous pressure to maintain the body they have, to not eat and to be absolutely perfect..
