Essay / Gender Roles Essay - 1147
For various reasons, there is a shift where women are going to work like men, and some of them are working in male-dominated workplaces such as fields STEM and legal. One side of society accepts this big change, while the other side is still in shock from this sudden change because it contradicts the idea of the role of men and women in society. Mixed reactions and gender role stereotypes affect the work environment for both working men and women. Most companies adjust their policies so that they meet the needs of both male and female workers. However, these policies often disadvantage female workers. Most working women receive lower wages than men doing the same work. According to statistics from the American Association of University Women's (AAUW), on average, working women earn 79% of the wages of working men in 2014 (Hill, 2015). The percentage gets worse when race and ethnicity are added to the calculation. The term 77 cents on the dollar is created from this wage gap between male and female workers. Women are paid less because of the biased idea that women are less likely to focus on their work because they have to maintain both their jobs and their homes. This will lead employers to believe that it is reasonable to pay their female workers less than their men.
