Essay / The novel 1984 by George Orwell - 1995
Since the dawn of time, man has attempted to build vast empires to control the globe. Manifest Destiny was seeded into our human nature, creating within us the desire to conquer. In the United States, we are used to a secure democratic government where everyone has a voice and freedoms, but what if everything changed? What would it look like if America were stripped of all our freedoms, rights and freedoms? We think this is crazy and could never happen, but George Orwell illustrates, throughout his novel 1984, the possible dangers of total government control. Even though this exaggerated society seems far-fetched, many of its fictional governmental qualities are beginning to align with our current government. Throughout the novel, the totalitarian government, called Big Brother, constantly attacks the people psychologically. One of the first things that strikes protagonist Winston Smith is a poster on the street reading “BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU” (Orwell 5). From the beginning of the book, the government is already sowing fear among the citizens of Oceana. This threat is also not complete, but all citizens are monitored everywhere by cameras and microphones. In every room there is a “telescreen” with propaganda about the greatness of the country. Minister Joseph Goebbels, head of Nazi propaganda, said: “If you tell a big enough lie and keep repeating it, people will eventually believe it. » And that's exactly what Big Brother did. They had set aside complete divisions to change the history of the country and make it look like they were doing well. People who remembered the truth (like Winston) were considered rebels of the state and had to be “vaporized” (Orwell 51). It wasn't in the middle of a paper......we don't have the "Ministry of Peace, the Ministry of Love, the Ministry of Truth and the Ministry of Abundance" (Orwell 8) We are slowly moving in that direction. As time passes and technology advances, will government be restricted? If we follow the path we are on, America could become Oceania before we know it. Instead of the year 1984, George Orwell should have written 2084. Works Cited “Americans now live in a society that rivals Orwell's in 1984.” Infowars.com. November 9, 2011. Internet.
