  • Essay / evolution of butterflies - 837

Butterflies are established all over the world and in all kinds of environments: cold and hot, humid and dry, in high mountains and at sea level. The majority of species Butterflies are found in tropical areas, particularly in tropical rainforests. There are a variety of sizes of butterflies. The world's smallest known butterflies, the blue pygmy found in southern California, have a wingspan of just over half an inch. The largest species, the QueenAlexandras bird of New Guinea, can measure up to twelve inches from wingtip to wingtip. Many butterflies migrate in order to stay away from any adverse environmental conditions like cold. Butterfly migration is not well understood. Most migrate fairly short distances, such as the Common Buckeye, Painted Lady, and Red Admiral, but a few, like some Monarchs, migrate thousands of miles. As highly developed insects, butterflies and moths have a complete life cycle. When a complete life cycle or lifespan is stated, it means that there are four distinct stages. Every lifespan is absolutely different. It also serves a diverse function in the life of the insect. The most important structural adaptation of butterflies is in their wings and how butterflies and moths use them for cover. The wings of many butterflies have evolved to mimic their environment; a particularly good example is the green hair rack. These butterflies have wings that are shaped and colored to look exactly like the leaves the butterfly is on; which implies that it is extremely more difficult for predators to find. Many butterflies have developed eyespots on their wings. These eye spots give the butterfly the facade of a...... middle of paper ......pretty and flashy colors. The butterfly has large hook-shaped wings. Usually butterflies have these colors: brown, black, yellow, blue, dark green, white and coffee, among other colors. Many species of butterflies have eyes on their wings to confuse and frighten predators. Unlike camouflage, the butterfly blends into its surroundings. To make them harder to find, other butterfly wings are designed to blend in with their surroundings. Some butterflies are poisonous to eat; by doing so, it discourages any animals or predators from eating them. Finally, migration, the reason some butterfly species migrate recurrently is to avoid colder weather. These species are what have made humanity fascinating. A butterfly gives us a lot of inspiration because it represents independent and strong character, particularly passive and calm..
