Delta Air Lines Airport and Airspace Capacity Case StudyHartsfield International Airport- Atlanta's Jackson is one of the largest airports in the world and is the primary hub for Delta Air Lines, one of the world's largest airlines. This case study will examine the relationship between demand and capacity for Delta Air Lines' home hub. Forecasts for air travel predict huge growth rates of up to 50% by 2025. Airlines, airports and the entire air transport infrastructure will be challenged to meet this level of demand at as we move into the future. Today, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) is known for being one of the busiest airports in the world. More than 250,000 passengers arrive and depart daily to more than 225 different destinations around the world. About 50 different carrier and cargo airlines operate out of ATL, but Delta Air Lines (headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia) calls this hub home. ATL is also the primary location for TechOps, Delta's maintenance, repair and overhaul team that serves Delta's airline fleet and the fleets of many other airlines. ATL has five runways ranging in length from 9,000 to 12,000 feet and categories I to III. The ATL terminal spans 130 acres with 7 concourses and 207 gates. ATL is within a 2 hour flight of 80% of the United States, making it a very important central point for many travel origins. The aviation industry has been aware of the major growth trends in air transport for many years and has undertaken to carry out detailed simulations of future requirements.
