    Over time, some zoos have imitated an animal's natural habitat. Even though some zoos are becoming more animal-friendly, many are still being left behind. Most small zoos still have small cement enclosures with little nature. When an animal is placed in a small enclosure, it is unable to meet its needs that nature can easily provide. Animals like elephants are used to walking 30 kilometers a day, at the zoo they cannot meet their needs. Needs that cannot be met lead to unhealthy behaviors. According to PETA, "many develop neurotic and self-injurious behaviors [known as] zoochosis, which are rarely, if ever, observed in nature." Primates shed their feces and eat their own vomit. The birds tear out their feathers. Tigers walk endlessly and polar bears swim endless figure eights. In the zoo, animals cannot hunt for their own food either. Most of the animals in the zoo are predatory animals that like to hunt for food. A zoo cannot provide that; the animals are therefore fed in bowls. A zoo is nothing compared to nature. There are no limits on where animals can walk, fly or swim. There is no cement around pure nature. Animals live authentic lives in nature while playing an important role in their ecosystem.
