    Running and screaming. Burning and freezing. Holocaust survivors have been through it all. Their stories describe every detail of the horrific events they experienced. Although the book Nightfather is fiction, the stories described accurately depict the real-life Holocaust. By dissecting the period of Carl Friedman's Nightfather, the reader can understand the elements of fiction and realize the impact of the story on fictional literature. This book takes place in the 1960s, after World War II. Some Germans would rather forget that this happened than acknowledge the shameful events that took place during World War II. “The trial of Adolf Eichmann began on April 11, 1961 in Jerusalem, Israel. Eichmann was indicted on 15 counts of crimes against the Jewish people, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and membership in a hostile organization” (“Eichmann Trial”). “The 1960s saw a rise in civil rights and other organizations promoting freedom and equality for blacks and women” (“Social Movements and Organizations”). Along with the War on Poverty being fought at this time, a war in Vietnam also progressed. “Unfortunately, the war on poverty has been expensive, too expensive, especially since the Vietnam War has become the government's top priority” (“The Vietnam War”). The War on Poverty was almost completely ignored as the Vietnam War continued. Financing the Vietnam War was the U.S. government's main priority rather than helping America's poor become financially stable. “NightFather, by Carl Friedman, is a book about a crazy father/holocaust survivor who tells his children horrific survivor stories. from his past” (“Nightfather101-Main Idea”).
