A federal bill called the Employment Nondiscrimination Act was introduced in Congress but failed to pass out of committee. With current political control in the House and Senate, it is unlikely that the bill will come up for a vote, much less obtain the necessary votes. United States President Barack Obama spoke in favor of the bill and in 2016 mentioned the need for the bill in his last State of the Union report.
