  • Essay / Critical Analysis of Wasted Perfection by John Updike

Every creation cannot continue, projects stop and someone else takes their place. The poet feels that many works, achievements and traditions can disappear instantly. The ending is not a special moment to watch and wait for. The pinnacle has already happened in life at the moment of realization of desires, plans and goals. The poet fears that the worst is yet to come. “It’s the finality of it all that seems to bother Updike the most.” (Bachelor 217). Readers perceive a feeling on the part of mr. Updike's expectations of old age are to become stronger and better, while still being able to pass on one's accomplishments and establish eternal success. Expectations are far away and it's hard to deal with the ending.
