The main confrontation of the play: Antonio against Shylock the usurer who also happens to be Jewish. The two men don't like each other at all. Antonio does not approve of usury, and Shylock, in response, criticizes the Christians, their way of living and their arrogance towards his nation, and above all he hates Antonio because "in base simplicity he lends money for free ยป (1.3.37-38). ). Shylock has no friends in the room; even his own daughter will take her savings and run away with her Christian beloved. The usurer is rejected by everyone because of his greed and selfishness (Janik 128). After his daughter runs away, Shylock focuses solely on his hatred towards Antonio and wants revenge by killing the Christian businessman. Shylock represents how business changes personality and how making money can become a dangerous obsession destroying people's lives.
