Everywhere we go, we are told what to wear, what to drink, what to look like, etc. Whether it's on billboards, in newspapers, on television, in magazines, it's everywhere. That said, advertisements have a great influence on our lives. While searching for advertisements for similar products from two different American periods, I came across two beer advertisements – one from the 1950s and one from the 1990s. In the 1950s, beer advertisements focused their attention on the family, particularly about how a mother and father, providing for and supporting a household, should enjoy beer. However, in the 1990s, beer advertisements were primarily aimed at the male consumer. What do men love more than beer? Yes, women. The advertising industry has used attractive women to be associated with advertisements, but do not necessarily have any affiliation with the product. The difference between these two advertisements about American culture is that then they were about gender roles and now they are about sexism.
