  • Essay / Why I want to study English Language and Literature

    I enjoy English above all other subjects because of the complete escape it can offer. I'm always amazed at how words can affect our emotions; make us laugh or cry, unite people and divide them. Our world would be nothing without words. This is why I chose to study English language and literature at university. My fascination with the way we speak and write dictates an important part of my academic and private life; I have always made sure to surround myself with literature, while studying the English language is a more recent discovery of pleasure. My passion for reading has led me to a wide range of literature, from classics like Dickens and Burnett enjoyed in my youth, to more modernist authors like Tennessee Williams and Angela Carter. Currently, I am absorbed in the work of Sylvia Plath; his detached and ambiguous style of poetry is both exciting and a challenge to study.
