Many articles, books, and articles have been written about Lee Harvey Oswald's motivations for killing President John F. Kennedy. No one knows exactly what motivated him to commit this horrific act, but there has been speculation that a fatherless upbringing or his mental health paved the way to making him the most famous assassin of the 20th century . Lee Harvey Oswald had a difficult childhood. . He grew up without a father figure in his life, so he lacked direction from the most important source (Biography: Lee Harvey Oswald). His father died two months before Oswald was born, leaving his mother with three young children. As a result, "his mother frequently neglected Lee and left him with various babysitters" (Diamond). These babysitters allegedly abused him, sparking a pattern of violence that lasted throughout his life. As a young boy, when his mother became unable to care for him, Oswald was sent to residential school. This gave him yet another feeling of rejection. His family moved around a lot, which explains his “outsider” mentality. This had an effect on him because “by the time he was seventeen he had lived in over twenty different cities” (Diamond). One of those moves was to New York. During this time, Oswald was sent to a juvenile reformatory. This brief stay offers insight into his mental state. There, he underwent a psychiatric evaluation which revealed that the seventh grader had a "fantastic and strange life, revolving around themes of omnipotence and power by which [he] tries to compensate for his shortcomings and his current frustrations. Although treatment was recommended, it was never received.
