Essay / Pros and Cons of Orcas - 687
Should captive orcas be banned nationwide? A few states across the country are trying to ban orca captivity. Recently, California has gone to great lengths to try to put an end to this horrible tragedy. SeaWorld itself covered up and lied about the lives of the killer whales and the mistakes they made. Many people don't realize the true tragedy of capturing orcas living at SeaWorld every day. The orca is the largest member of the dolphin (Gammon) family. Killer whales are known to be very social animals that travel in groups called pods. Each group has a unique form of communication with dialects differing from one group to another (Basic Facts). Orcas are very emotionally attached to their families. They all work together to hunt their food and protect each other. When killer whales become separated, they make long calls to try to find each other. In the 1970s and 1980s, when people started catching orcas, they herded them into coves. They then had fishing boats equipped with large nets that will capture the whales, where they can spot the youngest ones (Hoyt). If whales are killed at the hunting grounds, the fishermen would then cut them open, fill them with rocks and attach anchors, so that they would sink to the bottom of the ocean. People do not realize the scale of the crime committed. Once the whales reach SeaWorld, they begin their training. They are released into small puddles, where they interact with other whales in the facility. If the orcas do a decent job, they are reformulated with fish. If the new whale does not do this correctly, neither the trained whale nor the beginner whale are reformulated. Shortly after failing middle of paper......I could gather food. After being hand-fed for all these years, would orcas remember how to hunt on their own? After thinking about this process, they came to the conclusion to release them into a sea enclosure. This would keep whales in waters that are open to the public, but not used for entertainment or performance purposes (David). Orca captivity is a major problem in today's society. Many people have different emotions about whether or not orcas should be banned from captivity. SeaWorld is harming the lives of orcas instead of improving their health. All killer whales in captivity should be released into the wild. These incredible large creatures should enjoy their lives in the open air, instead of living in small tanks. By releasing these large animals into their own habitat, it will create a more beneficial life for the whales..
