    In life, empty, abandoned and lonely people who desperately need help put their faith in God or a significant person. A current example is that of the 10-year-old boy released by his captor after singing a gospel song for hours. In The Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc by Mark Twain, Joan Arc, a teenage French military commander, demonstrates faith every time she goes into battle or is about to face death. Eventually, she is captured and even though she dies, she continues to keep her faith in God. By showing the effects of faith on Joan of Arc and her comrades, Mark Twain illustrates his belief that the value of intense personal faith is important in everyone's life. Twain first portrays the importance of faith when Joan of Arc is afraid of what the English will do to France. When speaking to the priest, Jeanne says: “…I believe in the Christian faith and that God has redeemed us from the fires of hell…” (64).
