  • Essay / The Conflict in Greece Under the Nazi Regime - 2021

Never Give InAs Babe Ruth, a famous baseball player, once said: “It's hard to beat a person who never gives up. » Faced with a challenge that requires a lot of perseverance or, even less, any obstacle in life, the person who sticks to it ends up finding an answer or a solution. With morale very close to this, the Greeks were determined to surpass the Nazis during World War II in order to reconquer their country. Modern Greek authors such as Ileana Karafilly and other anonymous poets like those translated by Wislawa Szymbroska depict characters in their works who exemplify the concept of the will to pursue what one wants through hard work and a strong can-do attitude consisting of putting personal needs before others. . Being trapped in Nazi-invaded Greek society and stuck in an “every man for himself” perspective, no one could trust each other. Once people realized that they would have to fight for what they wanted, citizens and characters were able to achieve whatever they wanted as long as they were willing to work for it. This struggle to reclaim their homeland began on April 6, 1941, when Germany invaded Greece and the conflict began. With the country no longer under the control of the Greeks, but rather under the control of foreigners, pandemonium spread within the country (Livanos 15-16). While the Nazis were in power, people lived in resistance, wanting to fight the Nazis in order to regain their freedom (Livanos 1-3). Finally, in October 1944, Greece was liberated, but as Greece remained in poor condition, its economy collapsed and remained weak to the present day (Shiller 15-18).
