The crack and cocaine epidemic in the United States shaped the foundation of America's war on drugs. In the early 1980s, the majority of cocaine began to be shipped to the United States, arriving in Miami via the Bahamas and the Dominican Republic (UDOJ). The foreign origin of the drug made it easier for the trafficker to return to the United States with the drug and also its receipt. “Soon there was a huge quantity of cocaine powder in these islands, which caused the price to drop by up to 80 percent (UDJ).” Thus making it more assessable for shipping to America.
