  • Essay / Authorized Abortion Essay - 1387

Abortion is a major debate in today's society and has been a heated topic for decades. The question is whether abortion should be allowed or not. In general, I support the idea of abortion in specific circumstances. If a woman becomes pregnant as a result of rape, she has no moral obligation to carry the baby to term. It is a gross expectation of society to think that a woman should give birth to a baby conceived as a result of rape and care for that child as if she were her own. In this discussion, I will argue that abortion is permitted if the mother has been a victim of rape. Judith Thomson is a pro-abortion philosopher. Judith begins her debate by asserting that “a fetus is no more a human than an acorn is a tree.” When does an acorn become an oak (Thomson 37-56)? The answer is that no one really knows, there is no direct moment where one thing becomes another, it's the same as a fetus. When does a fetus become a baby? Thomson uses the analogy of the “famous violinist.” In this analogy, you are kidnapped, when you wake up in the morning you learn that you are connected to a famous violist who needs your kidneys for nine months. It is said that the violinist is an innocent person with a right to life, while separating from the violinist would kill him (Thomson 37-56). I believe that in this case it would be moral to disconnect from the violinist, even if it means his death. You did not agree to support the violinist for nine months and therefore have no obligation to do so. This scenario can be used to support the victim who has been raped. If you were raped, you did not consent to sex or make a conscious decision to accept the consequences of forced acts of copulation. Moreover, you...... middle of paper ...... unjust aggressor who violated the dignity of women. Rape is an act of force and violence, unlike marital love in which both spouses give themselves freely in an act of love. The woman who has been raped is not responsible for this act and therefore has the right to prevent the pregnancy or even terminate it through an abortion. However, I agree with all the arguments that state murder is wrong. I agree that killing is wrong from the time the fetus becomes a human being until any adulthood. No one should be allowed to take the life of another because it constitutes a crime. I believe abortion should remain legal for several reasons; because women should have the right to make decisions about their own bodies, especially if they are victims of rape, and because they have the autonomy to exercise this right regardless of state laws.
