  • Essay / Agent Orange in the Vietnam War - 1725

At the meeting, the United States improved relations by providing support for HIV/AIDS and bird flu in Vietnam and Bush even praised the progress made by Vietnam. Although this event occurred years after the Vietnam War, this is a relatively short time scale to account for the number of deaths and effects of Agent Orange. Thirty years is not a long time for countries to reconcile considering the fact that Vietnam needs to create peace villages for children still affected by Agent Orange (Dainton). Agent Orange continues to cause birth defects in Vietnam since its use began during the Vietnam War (Schmidt). Bush visited Vietnam, praising its progress and growth despite the war caused and aggravated by American ideals. This act of humility would not have happened without Agent Orange. The goal of relations between the United States and Vietnam would not be to improve the health of their population. American contributions to Vietnam would likely be to provide socio-economic support and not to combat HIV/AIDS or (socialist) bird flu. Without Agent Orange, humanitarian aid in Vietnam would be considerably less focused. Bush's decision to meet with President Triết reformed U.S.-Vietnamese relations by restoring trade. This short period of extremely violent and deadly war, followed by humanitarian support and aid, would likely not have happened under Agent Orange. Agent Orange provided faces to those affected by the Vietnam War to convince Americans to be humane in their actions and right the mistakes they had made.
