Essay / Life Transformation: A Personal Journey by Tom Shadyac
stagnation of Erikson's theory of development. People face this stage between the ages of 35 and 55. Generativity is about teaching and guiding the next generation while caring for them. Stagnation is basically the opposite of that, it's being inactive with young people and getting more involved. In I Am, Shadyac is really trying to communicate that we are one, that we are not separate but connected to each other. He says that sympathy is the strongest trait and that we are born to be a community, a democracy and to help each other. That’s exactly how it should be and that’s what generativity is. One important thing Shadyac said was really about the idea of stagnation; when he said that if we continue to view our enemies as separate from us, then we will continue to live the same way we do now, instead of making a change. With stagnation people don't care about the next generation, some even look down on them because of the way they live, but like Shadyac said, if we continue this separation we will never see the change we have.
