English is an international language widely used in business, information and technology, advertising, broadcasting, etc. A high level of English proficiency is essential if students wish to enter these fields after their studies. Teachers play a vital role in honing students' oral English proficiency to meet the demand of the position. According to Bulley (2004), the most defining element of English is sound. Zaidan and Jassem (1997) also agree and state that good knowledge of English is a major element in speaking English close to that of the mother tongue. Therefore, it is more important for English language teachers to know the sounds of the English language (Deterding & Poedjosoedarmo, 1998). Teachers need to discover the knowledge of phonology to help themselves and learners in teaching and learning. Teachers' awareness of this importance will help students become fluent in their English language, speaking, listening and reading. According to Fromkin, Rodman, and Hyams (2003), phonology is the study of how speech sounds form systems and patterns. Phonetics is also one of the important elements of phonology. Phonetics is the study of the sound of speech Fromkin, Rodman & Hyams (2003). As a future English teacher, it is important to acquire knowledge of phonology to guide students in their speaking, reading and listening skills. So, this essay will discuss how knowledge of phonology helps in the future role of an English teacher. An English teacher's knowledge of phonology can help them improve their own pronunciation and can help students from different native language backgrounds pronounce English words correctly.
