Essay / Hersey and Blanchard's Situational Leadership Theory (SLT) asserts that a leader's effectiveness depends on the readiness, or ability and willingness, of his or her followers to accomplish a task. This leadership style is an amalgamation of task-oriented and relationship-oriented characteristics that are used depending on the situation and the followers involved. According to SLT, as followers become more ready, the leader's style should adapt accordingly (Kinicki & Kreitner, 2009). The figures below (Babou, 2008) summarize the leadership behaviors that SLT presumes to be appropriate at different stages of follower preparation. . Each quadrant of the Leadership Behaviors chart corresponds to the same quadrant of the Follower Readiness chart. Leadership Behaviors Follower Preparation For example, according to this theory, the leader would employ highly directive/strongly supportive leadership behaviors toward the disillusioned learner. Ideally, the leader helps followers as they progress through the stages to reach the autonomous/delegated level of success. While I don't necessarily fully subscribe to this theory, it appears to have merit and I believe it is important for an effective leader to have the ability and flexibility to adapt their style to the needs of their subordinates in order to encourage everyone’s success. I also believe that an effective leader plays an important role in promoting and shaping individuals' readiness for motivation and commitment. Therefore, I developed my leadership assessment with these points in mind. The assessment focuses on 14 attributes that I believe are important not only for a leader to succeed within the SLT parameters, but...... middle of document...... are less difficult worth thinking about because they reveal that I have a long way to go – even more than I would have estimated. They also reveal that Bobby believes in my potential and my chances of succeeding as an effective leader. I know I can do it, but it was very reassuring to hear it from another person I respect a lot. It also validates the value of my decision to enroll in CSU’s Organizational Leadership degree program. Lessons and exercises like this will definitely be an integral part of my long-term success as an effective leader. Works Cited Babou. (March 26, 2008).
