  • Essay / Reflections on Teaching and Learning - 1740

I tell them how my parents have spoken to me all my life. I stress the importance of education and going to college. I am aware that it is important to share cultural experiences, using diverse backgrounds, values and experiences that students and teachers bring to the classroom to broaden our understanding of how our society works. My life experiences have always been positive. My mother is a teacher and my father is a historian. They have always provided me with culturally relevant life experiences and exposed me to many different things. I keep all of this in mind every day in my classroom and when planning. When I plan field trips, I think about the places and things that I enjoyed as an elementary school student and continue to enjoy. I talk with my students about these experiences and there is always some type of homework related to the field trip. I give students many real-world word problems to solve and teach financial literacy mini-lessons to help my students understand how important math is in the daily life of a citizen of our country.
