  • Essay / The Need for Same-Sex Marriage Equality - 638

I believe that same-sex marriages should be allowed in this country and that gay people should have exactly the same rights as straight people. Gay marriage really has nothing to do with the Bible or religion, all because it says that being false in the Bible doesn't make it true. People's rights should not be based on a book. Because the same book says owning slaves is okay as long as you don't kill them. People just seem to care what other people do, why do you care? Homosexuals are even victims of hate crimes. One day, June 24, 1973, some guys burned down a bar full of gay people and killed 29 people in the fire. Sounds like something you'd go to jail for, doesn't it? Well, they found tons of evidence of the crime, but they never bothered to pursue the case further. Some people think it's because people found out the 29 dead were gay and didn't care. One of the survivors of the fire was a teacher who was fired because they found out he was in the bar. Why do people worry so much when worse things are happening in the world? Children are dying every day because they don't have food, pollution is getting worse and wars continue. Most young voters say same-sex marriage equality is a societal achievement. Even some of the opponents who are not stubborn say they will lose in the end. The first known article about gays and marriages was in 1989. The idea was relatively new at the time and spread quickly, but everyone was like "WAAAAAAH you're talking about that." But the reason it spread so quickly was because people thought it was an obvious idea. America has changed, first we created women...... middle of paper ...... me and I marriages usually have lower rates too. divorce rate than ordinary couples. If a person who is not part of a religion is forced by religious people not to marry, is this not also a form of coercion to worship a religion? How would we feel if a religion or someone else imposed their beliefs on us? We probably wouldn't feel very good, so why are we doing this to gay people? All they want is the right to marry. I don't think that's too much to ask. As a nation, I believe we do not have the right to take away the privilege of marriage from two people who wish to engage in a relationship with the one they love. Society has come a long way since the days of illegal interracial marriages. However, intolerance still exists for many minority groups. Legalizing same-sex marriage would be one step closer to a nation free of prejudice..
