Essay / A Distant Episode by Paul Bowles - 671
The unique effect is the main idea that the writer wants to convey to his readers. The writer brings together all his powers and tools to achieve this successfully, as in a distant episode. A Distant Episode, in fact, is considered a milestone in the history of the English short story genre. This is very important in a field called orientalism, which shows the Orient in the eyes of the West. In other words, this short story shows the difference between Western culture and Eastern culture from a Western perspective. The writer used certain tools to emphasize this unique effect. In this short story, the author showed how the West sees the East. Westerners have always viewed the Arab world as an inferior and primitive place where many ignorant people live. Rudyard Kipling says in his poem, The Ballad of East and West: “East is East and West is West, and the twain shall never meet.” This means that the East will never be like the West. The East will always be an ugly place, while the West will always be a place of civilization. A distant episode highlights the difference between Arab culture and Western culture. In this short story, the professor is an example of the haughty Western civilized man who visited Morocco to look for dirt, to enjoy seeing disgusting primitive people and to smell the smells. During his journey to find camel boxes, he encounters many wild and ignorant people who treat him bluntly and brutally, while he uses etiquette and thinks all the time. So, when reading the story, there is an apparent paradox between the Western professor who is educated, civilized and polite, while the people he encountered were so blunt, debased, primitive, savage and revolting and were only looking for money. s...... middle of paper ......like giving money to the qauagi saying "thank you.." Moreover, during the whole story it is linked to the word "Think" even in the worst situations. Additionally, when people would hit him to take his money, he would say "you can have my money; stop kicking me." Here he looks like he doesn't care about money, even though the Arabs were about to kill him for money. So the professor always looked superior, clean, educated and tall. In a word, the author managed to highlight the sole effect of the difference between Eastern and Western cultures in the eyes of Westerners. Westerners have always viewed the Arab world as an inferior and primitive place where many ignorant and brutal people live. The author successfully used certain elements such as language, characterization and, preparing the general atmosphere, to emphasize the unique effect..
