Essay / Political Ethical Dilemmas Concerning Truman and the Atomic Bomb
Like most Americans, I think it is a painful moral exercise to think about viewing such a destructive war as truly horrible for both countries involved. Having moral standards and a high sense of compassion for my fellow man, I can say that in this situation, my sympathies are with the innocent civilians of Japan who perished and the survivors who had to endure the harsh disasters of war as well as with our own United States. military losses. However, I believe that Truman's choice, as difficult as it was, actually saved countless lives in the long run. If these bombings had not occurred, it is unclear how long the war would have lasted, likely further increasing the death tolls in Japan and the United States. Additionally, being the widow of a United States Marine who proudly and selflessly served the United States, the country he loved, I have very proud patriotism, respect, love and honor for all of our service members and I undoubtedly support all decisions made by our government leaders that make their safety a top priority. This is certainly an issue of the utmost importance to our service members, their families, and our nation as a whole. Truman said that one of the main reasons behind the bombings was to save countless lives of our military and it is for this reason that I wholeheartedly support this very difficult decision.
