Talk ShowsIn the world of television, talk shows have undoubtedly occupied almost every inch of daytime television, and in doing so, they have stirred up plenty of controversy. In the '80s, soap operas and game shows dominated the daytime airwaves, but the '90s are definitely the decade of talk shows. The talk show craze seems to have started with originals such as Geraldo Riveria, Donahue and Sally Jesse Rafael (now called Sally). In fact, many of their original topics are still used on talk shows today, but with a different twist and style. format. Some of the talk shows on the air today, like the Oprah Winfrey Show and the Montel Wiliams Show, focus on improving society and the quality of life. They focus on topics such as children, workplace, daily life and sometimes have interviews with respectable celebrities. You can watch shows with titles like “Teaching Your Kids Responsibly” or “How to Manage Your Work Week.” These shows truly educate people and teach the child watching them right from wrong. They also host shows that expose things like child or spousal abuse and make people aware of these dangers. People even feel a special attachment to their favorite talk show hosts and talk about them as if they know them. Even so-called “trash talk shows,” like the Jerry Springer Show, have their advantages. Jerry once did a show featuring David Duke, a former KKK clan member who was currently running for Senate. Jerry says his constant Clan shows are meant to educate people about racism. (Medill 1) Although he did it for publicity purposes, I think Jerry Springer really helped us by revealing this man for who he was. Jerry's rebuttal to his poor presentation is that...... in the middle of a paper......" (Dickens 1) After thinking about this subject for a long time, I have come to the conclusion that the talk -shows aren't as bad as people claim. I think in today's society people are looking to find a reason to blame Americans for their problems although I'm sure they see some of these outrageous things. television doesn't improve our society, some of the most respectable shows use topics that do. And the fact remains that no one is obligated to continue, or even watch a talk show. choose to watch it, which almost all Americans do, you contribute to its popularity. Plus, if children are instilled with good morals and have an open relationship with their parents, these shows could almost be considered a gateway. entry to open up to an important conversation. I think that a child who discovers what exists at a young age will have an easier time adapting to the world...
