Essay / Police officers need more training - 1316
“There are three kinds of people in the world. There are wolves and there are sheep. And then there are those who protect the sheep from the wolves” (Christopher Shields, quoted by Police Line). There are many sheep in the world, but for every sheep there is a wolf. In this quote, those who protect the sheep are police officers. The men and women of the police choose every day to defend the “sheep”. These “sheep” are ordinary citizens, while the wolves are criminals. Those who protect the sheep in this quote are often in danger, just as police officers are often in danger when protecting citizens. Even if student police officers undergo several months of training, this does not help to fully prepare new police officers for daily situations. It is necessary for the community that cadets receive more comprehensive training that will benefit officers once in office. “In 1844, New York City had two police forces; day duty and night shift” (Sabath, nd). Having forces available night and day made it possible to provide twenty-four hour surveillance to protect the “sheep” of such a large city from the “wolves”. Police chiefs were in charge of the police department during this time. ("The Beginnings of America", nd). Although police chiefs are still in charge, they are now appointed police commissioners. It's important to have a certain person to chair the entire department, so that police officers also follow the laws, and don't just arm citizens. If the police simply abused their power over everyone, they would be as bad as a “wolf”. By ensuring that every part of a civilian's life has some form of protection, it has allowed the police force to become a profession.
