Suicide is the leading cause of death among LGBT+ (“LGBTQ”) people. Much of this depends on the support the person received when coming out. The National Alliance of Mental Illness writes: “A person who was rejected after coming out to their family was more than 8 times more likely to have attempted suicide than a person who was accepted by their family after revealing your sexual orientation” (“LGBTQ”). It can obviously be very traumatic for someone to be rejected for coming out. Imagine if this person was a child. Children depend on the support of their families and without this support it can lead to extremely dangerous behavior. It is not surprising that if a child is accepted by his family, he will be mentally better off than the one who is rejected. A study done by the University of Washington's psychology department compared the anxiety rates of seventy-three transgender children and seventy-three cisgender children. All parents of transgender children were members of a support group. Not all parents were supportive of their children at first, but have since changed their minds. The study found that rates of anxiety were only slightly higher than those of cisgender children (Tanner). This is likely due to the rejection transgender children face daily from strangers. By finding this transgender
