Essay / What is malnutrition? - 2451
First and foremost, the most important way to combat malnutrition is to educate the population. Many Swazis lack the basic knowledge of human health that Americans learn in school. They should be educated to know what a healthy and balanced diet is. They can also be taught how to obtain it. Some Swazi children learn basic farming skills, so if they don't have money or a way to get to a grocery store or market, they can have a few vegetables or fruits at home (UN World Food Program United). . They could grow corn or cabbage. This would help exponentially because if children are orphaned, they will still be able to eat some of the foods they grew in their garden. Children will also learn how to grow things. They will also know or continue to learn at school what they need to stay healthy. We need to work with the Swazis to find out what works and what doesn't work with their culture. For example, the co-founder of SOHO told us the story of an agricultural club that came to Swaziland to plant fruits and vegetables for the people. The group did not work with the Swazi; they simply planted their food in many large gardens everywhere in the hope that it could feed some of the people. The only problem was that they didn't take into account the cultural beliefs of the Swazi. Once the gardeners left, many Swazis went to destroy all the gardens in the world.
