Essay / Freedom and Choice in Bollywood Films - 1397
Increasing globalization in the Indian subcontinent has brought about a series of new genres in Bollywood films. Films presenting the freedom that young people and women are fighting for are just some of the interesting films. I will explore two different films, Dor (2006) and Rang De Basanti (2006), each with its own view of "freedom" and "choice". Dor has a very simple storyline; two female protagonists (Meera and Zeenat) whose husbands respectively (Shankar and Amir) leave India to work in the Middle East. Unfortunately, employment in India is scarce, forcing lower middle class families to resort to such options. These families are constantly fighting for their freedom to survive. Shankar faces a similar dilemma. He has no choice but to go to Saudi Arabia and earn enough money so that his family in Rajasthan can repossess their haveli (a large house in Rajasthan) from a moneylender. Note here that Shankar's personal "freedom" is restricted by his efforts to "liberate" his family's house, which they could no longer afford. However, the theme of the freedom struggle in Dor is depicted more vividly through the chains of Meera's in-laws. inflicted on him after Shankar's death in a freak accident. She loses all sense of living. The once happy girl, who was always dancing and smiling, now tolerates the insults and emotional abuse to which her in-laws subject her. This was in addition to the normal and rather depressing cultural customs of making her visually resemble a Rajput widow. She is forced to dress in only one dark, understated shade of blue and cannot accessorize with bracelets or jewelry. Zeenat, on the other hand, comes to Rajasthan just to get Meera's forgiveness; if successful... middle of paper ...... brought their own widowed daughter-in-law into a life of servitude in exchange for their house. As India climbs the ladder to become an economic giant, there are many opportunities opening up in the country, but not everyone is entitled to freedom. Women are still marginalized in many parts of India, subject to the restrictions of ancient traditions and cultural norms. Few young people want to lead the nation and become politicians. However, small changes are taking place, people are taking a stand, women are becoming more independent, and this is all due to the economic liberalization of India. These films are just visual summaries of the changes people want to see happen. Freedom is a right for every human being and choices define what we do with our freedom, like in the movies; we shape a better world by making all the right choices.
