  • Essay / The Pros and Cons of Voting Age - 1442

Here they talk about what is happening in the country and the decisions that are being made around the world. Some teens might have interesting ideas and perspectives on what's going on that they can't currently share (Debono). Some would say it would be more democratic if 16 year olds could vote. The more people who vote, the more votes citizens have. It could also increase voter turnout. In the United States, 60 percent of the population currently votes. However, I think the cons outweigh the pros. Because teenagers spend all their time in a classroom, they lack real-world experience. You also need to think about what's really on someone's mind at this time in life: prom, high school, friends, and grades. They don't care about voting or making decisions for our country. Even if that were the case, consider the maturity level of 16-17 year olds. If 16 year olds are not mature enough to consume alcohol or tobacco, then voting is no different (Debono). To me, lowering the voting age to 16 is absurd. Teenagers lack real-world experience. At 16, people are just beginning to understand how government works and how their decisions will affect lives.
