Essay / Social Structure Theory of the Criminal Justice System
If the prison were to separate inmates by race and keep them away from each other, violence in the prison would decrease. Inmates primarily assault other inmates of another race and rarely their own, so if these inmates are segregated by race into different areas from each other, the incidence of assault would most likely decrease. At this point you can focus on crimes within specific races and the threat of a race war isn't much of an issue. Another possible consequence with inmates of different offenses is that the more aggressive or experienced offenders may manipulate and teach juvenile offenders to do things that they may not have known or wanted to do in the pass. For some inmates, they feel needed and able to learn the ropes from these offenders. By the time they come out, they are more knowledgeable about different crimes and how to commit them when handled by experienced men.
