  • Essay / Persuasive Essay on Minimum Wage - 2238

"The False Promise of the Hiking Wage." Los Angeles Times. September 21, 2014: A.22. Researcher on SIRS issues. Internet. March 02, 2015. Allen Sanderson begins by explaining that various states are trying to pass legislation to raise the minimum wage and that this measure has broad support. Then Sanderson goes on to explain what's wrong with this situation, since minimum wage workers could be making more money at home. Sanderson then questions whether it is right for the government to intervene in this matter. Sanderson points out that the government is not involved in companies' decision on sales prices, but that consumers and the market do it and keep prices fair, leading him to say that these same factors maintain workers' wages under control. Sanderson then points out that some argue that raising the minimum wage would benefit businesses because it would attract better, more efficient workers. Sanderson proves this false by claiming that if this were true, companies would have already done this and that most companies pay their employees more than minimum wage because they have a higher contribution. Requiring higher wages for employees who don't contribute as much would encourage companies to replace people with machines or move elsewhere. Sanderson says raising the minimum wage isn't the best way to lift hard workers out of poverty, but there are other ways to do it.
