  • Essay / Why are bees important? - 1505

Over time, countless bees die. Although they are not the only pollinators, honey bees, which pollinate more than 75% of the world's crops, are undoubtedly essential to our way of life. CCD, one of the biggest problems in the bee world, is a particularly tricky problem because different studies suggest different answers. “It’s not a case of cause, effect” (National Geographic). While everyone is pointing the finger at Colony Collapse Syndrome, the race has begun to understand the cause and what preventative measures can be taken to avoid it. Madly searching for the cause of Colony Collapse Syndrome, many scientists, as well as universities, are begging for funds to help with research. All is not lost, however, as scientists could be moving in the right direction. Researchers have discovered that fungicides change the behavior of bees. “Fungicides are used to control things like fungus on apples, and are not expected to impact healthy bees” (USnews). This came as a huge shock to the scientific world, because fungicides were not intended to harm insects at all. “Fungicides, which we didn't expect to harm insects, appear to have a sublethal effect on bee health” (nbcnews) Although fungicides do not directly kill bees, they do cause bee deaths. When a bee ingests pollen from a flower mixed with fungicides, it becomes much more susceptible to parasites and disease than a bee that ingests pollen without fungicides. “But according to the study, healthy bees that consumed such fungicides were much more likely to be infected by parasites” (USnews). What makes the research so unique is the data regarding fungicides, which until now have always been considered safe for bees....... middle of paper ......mites s' they are found in time, but even with all the help that can be given to the bees, it is of no use if they are already poisoned by the pollen on which they feed. -collapse-are-more-complex-than-we-thoughtgreendustriesblog.com/greendustries/2012/04/12/bees-and-survival-of-the-human-racenews.nationalgeographic/news/2013/13/120510-honeybee -bee-science-european-union-pesticides-colony-collapse-epa-science/nbcnews.com/science/honey-bees-trouble-blame-farm-chemicals-study-says-6C10736740aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/galveston /eneficials/beneficial-60_pollinators-_honey_bees.htmWired.com/wiredscience/2013/05/winter-honey-bee-losses/Science.time.com/2013/08/09/the-trouble-with-beekeeping-in-the -anthropocenehttp://www.mnn.com/local-reports/pennsylvania/local-blog/the-importance-of-honeybees
