Research is conducted by companies wanting to prove the effectiveness of their new products. The more people who are diagnosed, the more people who need treatment. Furthermore, it has been suggested that most of the funding for psychiatric meetings came from pharmaceutical companies. There is no doubt that Western conceptions of mental health are changing expressions of illness in other countries. For example, when antidepressants were first introduced in Japan, marketing efforts encouraged a complete change in the way depression is viewed in the country. Therefore, in recent years, the antidepressant market in Japan has seen considerable growth due to the movement to recognize human suffering in a way that meets the interests of the Western pharmaceutical industry. It's not enough for them to convince the West that their sadness is "depression" and their shyness is "social anxiety disorder." These Western viewpoints are increasingly used to sell drugs around the world; often with little or no evidence of their effectiveness. The questions therefore remain: is it right for the West to impose its knowledge of mental illness on other nations? Who really does this
