Essay / Fight in the River Between - 912
Struggle in the River Between In the book "The River Between" we find the traditional values of the tribe challenged by members of the tribe who had converted to Christianity . The novel focuses on the struggle between two conflicting interests: the first was the interest of converting Africans to Christianity, and the second was that of the tribe trying to maintain their traditional values in the midst of Christianity. The most contrasting characters in the story were Waiyaki and Joshua. Waiyaki had a strong influence on the people of the country, and his father, Chege, was a man who had powerful visions of his son's future: "Salvation will come from the hills." .. Get up. Heed the prophecy” (p. 20). Waiyaki's father placed the burden of this prophecy on his son's shoulders. The realization of his role in this prophecy came to Waiyaki at the end of the novel: "...the journey with his father, the ancient prophecy, and his perplexity at its meaning" (p. 138). "Now he knew what he would preach if given another chance: education for unity. Unity for political freedom" (p. 143). Chege told Waiyaki to learn from white people, but not to get involved in their vices: “Learn all the wisdom and secrets of the white man. But do not follow his vices” (p. 20). Waiyaki began to learn that knowledge and learning were important for his people to achieve victory against the white man's invasion. Waiyaki also understood that the traditions of the tribe are what held the people together, they were their roots: “Circumcision was an important ritual for the tribe. It held people together, bound the tribe... End the custom and the spiritual basis of the tribe. the cohesion and integration of the tribes would no longer exist” (p. 68). And even though... middle of paper ...... formed, Western revolutions, both religious and governmental, were happily accepted by Western cultures. But Western invaders never realized how ancient the civilizations they were intruding on were, and they never realized that African, Chinese, or Native American cultures were thousands of years old. Western cultures have had an impact on many countries, such as India, because when the ancient invaders arrived on this country, such as the Aryans, the East Indians accepted some of their beliefs and were even integrated into Indian society. But when modern Western cultures came in contact with India, especially the British, they eventually took over and made Indians second-class citizens. And until the 20th century, India was under their control. Western cultures have therefore certainly had an influential impact on other cultures..
